No forgotten memories!
Everything and nothing, really. Facebook helped us log the magnificent and the mundane since the social media platform hit the mainstream nearly twenty years ago. When I look back at my social media photos, I realize just how much can change in a mere twenty years. From cross-country moves to cross country races, new baby faces to high school graduations, travel abroad to home renovations, my social media feed captured many of the highlights. But even better, it captured the moments I probably would have forgotten.

Take, for instance, this photo. I don’t remember why I was making a cake or why the other kids weren’t close enough to shriek their jealousy but seeing this photo makes me remember how surprised and joyful my baby was to be handed a chocolate-covered beater. But I’m pretty sure this moment would have been lost to the chaos of motherhood if I hadn’t thought to capture it. But what really brings it home is that I shared it on social media. Thanks to Facebook, I know I shared it on April 18, 2011 which means I was probably baking a cake for Easter. Even better, Facebook helped me capture my thoughts in that moment. I hadn’t thought about that afternoon in many years until I converted my Facebook photos to a printed book. And now, fourteen years removed, my youngest who wouldn’t know a Facebook feed from a clarinet lesson, has proof of just how much he got away with as the baby and how much I loved being his mom.

What can happen in 20 years? Everything and nothing. I am so grateful now that Facebook was an easy platform to share the moments that I thought mattered in the moment. Sharing those moments with my kids now is a gift I didn’t see coming, but it has created even more moments that matter.
