Preserving Loved One’s Social Media Memories

At Recap Books, we want to help you with preserving loved one’s social media memories, especially when they are no longer able to do so.

Dealing with the deceased’s social media:

There are three key tasks:

  • Ensure you have the password or Legacy Contact access to the account
  • Download their data. (We can help you preserve it.)
  • Memorialize or Delete the social media profile.

To properly care for their Facebook or Instagram pages, you will need to know their password. It is not enough to just be logged into their account.

If you are logged in but don’t know the password, see this tutorial.

Unfortunately, if you are not logged in and don’t know the password, you will need a court order to request Meta release the data to you.

If you know the password, you can act on behalf of your loved one. Immediately proceed to our Free Tutorial on Downloading Your Social Memories.

Technically, it is a violation of Meta’s privacy policies to log in to someone else’s account; it is up to you to properly act on behalf of your loved ones. If they wouldn’t want you on their social media, you should respect that.

One way to salvage their memories and feel confident you are respecting their privacy is to only select Posts during the download process. Everything that you download would have been uploaded as a post. In rare circumstances, a post is set to “Only Me” where only the original poster can view the post. Most are made public.

Next, if you know it was their intent, you can set their account to name you as the Legacy Contact. Follow this Free Tutorial.

Once you have completed the download of their data, we recommend you do the following three things.

  • First, create an Express Recap. The Express Recap will deliver a shareable eBook that is a complete recreation of your loved one’s social media photos including captions and post description, organized by date and post. There are no decisions to make; just upload the data and get an eBook you can share with everyone.

  • Next, decide if you want to make Keepsake Hardcover Books. You can do this in your account after you receive your Express Recap. This process allows you to select which posts are in the books.
